People always look at me a little oddly when I tell them the types of things that I am a fan of. Typically I use popular television shows I enjoy or movies I've just watched to answer generic questions about things that I like, but if people ask me about some of my hobbies they're usually getting answers they don't expect.
For starters, I like to hula hoop. I actually love to hula hoop. You could say I am a BIG fan of hula hooping. The funny thing is, since most people can only conjure up images like this when I tell them I'm a hula hooper. . .
they think it's something kind of odd to be a fan of.
The fact is, hula-hooping is actually REALLY badass, but people have no idea what makes it so cool that someone would actually become a fanatic (like me!). Fast forward 60 years and here's what hula hooping looks like today. . .
Damn girl.
I find it odd and a little frustrating that people judge the things other people are fans of before trying to understand why others might like something they've never heard of or don't get.
I guess what I'm trying to say is don't harp it 'till you try it!! You may discover that hula-hooping IS badass or Star Trek IS cool as hell or that movie everyone's been seeing TOTALLY lives up to the hype. What people like should not be the ground you stand on to judge them (unless it's something morally wrong or disturbing, of course).
PEACE!
(me and my little circle)
I love your pictures, they really help illustrate your argument. I think a lot of people are so set in their ways of thinking sometimes that anything 'new' or different kind of throws them off and they don't know how to take it. Which is unfortunate because it causes people to become really close minded while living in an ever changing and evolving society.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see what you're saying here. I'm not really a fan of Miley Cyrus, but she was quoted saying, "Going out doesn't make you a bad person, just like going to church doesn't make you a good person". Actions speak so much louder than words, and things that you enjoy don't have to define you. I personally believe that people with tattoos shouldn't be judged just because they have tattoos, but rather what the content of them are.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cool topic to talk about, because it isn't something a lot of people are diehard fans of. It is cool that you are open about being a fan of hula hooping and showing how different it can be and how bad ass it can be to Hula Hoop. Now, if only I could hula hoop myself, we would be set haha
ReplyDeleteI'm a ballet dancer, so I totally appreciate hooping. It's not something I can do, and I think it's really cool that most people who do it are self-taught. I agree with you that our culture today seems to be full of knee-jerk reactions like those in your birdy picture. Speaking of which, I like the pics you're using, both in this post and in your first post! Like A'zya said, they really help your argument.
